TWENTY-NINE

Johnny called Jinx for the third time before his buddy answered. “What are you doing? I’ve been trying to call you.”

Jinx sounded like he’d been out jogging, which made no sense because no way Jinx was going to run for anything.

“Oh, just palling around with Bubba,” Jinx finally said. “What’s going on with you?”

“More trouble. Suze called and said the ATF and FBI both raided Baby Dolls. They grabbed Ernie and his security guys, including Brandon and Mark, and took them all away.” Johnny groaned. He wanted to punch something.

“Really? Why?”

Johnny would’ve punched Jinx if they were standing next to one another right now. “Why? Damn. Because an undercover ATF agent is missing. Because the place got robbed and no one reported it.”

“If no one reported it, how do they know it was robbed?” Jinx asked.

That was a really good question, actually. Johnny didn’t know. It didn’t matter because right now what’s done is done.

He felt like their entire plan was done, up in smoke. No way they could move on with the next plan if the Croucier brothers were being questioned right now. Who knew what those two idiots would say?

“Suze was pulled aside with the rest of the girls and asked a bunch of questions,” Johnny said. “Lucky for us, no one put two and two together and said Suze led us inside. Either they were going to be loyal to another dancer, or they hated the police, or they were too high when it happened to notice.”

“That’s some good luck,” Jinx said. “Hey, uh… I’m gonna go home now. Maybe we can grab a beer and talk more later. I stink and really need a shower.”

“How’s Natalie doing?” Johnny worried about Bubba. He seemed like a gentle giant but the dude was totally off. No telling what he might do, alone with a hot female. “Is Bubba behaving?”

“Yeah, yeah, Johnny, everything is peachy cool. It’s all good, nothing to worry about.”

“Maybe stop going all the way out there. We need to keep a low profile. I just got out of prison and the law will eventually tie me into this, or try to bust my balls, so stay clear of the trailer for the rest of the week,” Johnny said.

Jinx seemed to be smiling over the phone. “Good idea. No use chancing an encounter. Besides, Bubba is on his best behavior. Natalie seems to be enjoying herself, too. I guess she’s a big fan of Bon Jovi music.”

Johnny thought something wasn’t right but he had too many other things in his head right now, and he could always trust Jinx.

“Get back to Suze’s apartment and wait for me there,” Johnny said.

“Where are you?”

Johnny almost told Jinx to mind his own damn business, but knew he’d be taking his anger out on his friend. “I’m meeting with JoJo and Rick.”

“Why?”

“Because Rick can get us information, that’s why… and JoJo just happens to be around. Now get away from the trailer, make sure no one follows you, and stay in the apartment.
